Email and Spam Filtering
We know that many of our customers are bothered by the number of unsolicited commercial Email (UCE or spam) that they receive. Up to now, we have taken steps to try to limit the amount of unwanted Email that arrives in your inbox by subscribing to blacklists that let us reject messages from sites known to send out spam.
We have now implemented spam detection software that should help to significantly reduce the number of unwanted Email messages in your mailbag.com mailbox. However, differentiating between valid Email and spam is not simple. The software we are using tries to identify spam using the following tactics:
Header analysis: Spammers use a number of tricks to mask their identities, fool you into thinking they've sent a valid mail, or fool you into thinking you must have subscribed at some stage. The software tries to spot these.
Text analysis: Spam Emails often have a characteristic style and some characteristic disclaimers and text. The software can spot these too.
Blacklists: The software supports many useful blacklists such as mail-abuse.org and osirusoft.com.
Razor: Vipul's Razor is a collaborative spam-tracking
database, which works by taking a signature of spam messages.
Since spam typically operates by sending an identical message to
hundreds of people, Razor short-circuits this by allowing the first
person to receive a spam to add it to the database at which point
everyone else will automatically block it.
